Sometimes a nostalgic DVD can quickly reprise how important humor used to be and perhaps surmise that, in these times, how much of it is missed. In a thrift store, for just a few dollars was a multi-DVD collection entitled The Best Of The Tonight Show. Included in the package was a show with Johnny Carson recorded way back in 1969 with old-fashioned two-inch video tape. Although the visuals and audio are not quite up to snuff technically, the show itself has to be the best ever. Altogether and totally improvised with Bob Hope, George Goble, Dean Martin and Carson, it’s absolutely hilarious. His final show is also included in the package.
ME THINK
Do you remember Betty Hutton and Jimmy Stewart in the Greatest Show On Earth. How about expressions like ‘right on the button’ and ‘good as gold’, when at one time what just a simple human handshake was worth. The Shriners circus at the PNE and the thrill of the ‘shoots the shoots’. The parade from downtown Vancouver all the way down to the PNE grounds, what chemistry! Does that bring back the old days? You bet!
The White Lunch baked custard pudding, Wow and Scotts unbelievable chiffon lemon pie. Compare that to theatre row, now. Gosh, by golly, it sure makes you ‘kinda wonder’ why so much has vanished. It seems almost overnight. The Krak-a-joke shop, like their sneezing powder and invisible ink. Makes some seniors a bit thirsty and enhances their nostalgic appetite. Today’s greatest show on earth, (sometimes known as ‘marketing’ and ‘technology’) have possibly played a major role here, me thinks.
