I was completely old fashioned, using Canada POST, licking stamps, but now my archaic life has become TOAST. I was used to the sound of genuine letters through that mail slot, now look what you and I have GOT. That computer machine with so much technological warmth REPLACE. Who has got any time for handwriting letters to WASTE? I’ve become accustomed to THE HUMAN RACE.
Sitting in the majesty of the dome car’s views, especially through the Canadian Rockies, deciding to skip the snack car, feeling a hunger for the luxury of splurging in the dining car. You find yourself sharing memories with other seniors who lived in Vancouver.
“Do you remember Eatons Marine Room, how about Woodwards food FLOOR?” The Skydiner, Dunne and Rundle Cameras, Wosks, Fields clothing STORE. It ‘reigned’ British Austins, Vauxhalls, Hillmans and now, what’s left? Parking meters EVERYWHERE! Sure nice having this special time to SHARE.”
As you near a two hour stop over in Jasper, enjoying your just desserts in the dining car, all kinds of nostalgia unfolds:
KEEPING TRACK
Did you ever take the Super CONTINENTAL, stay at Jasper Park LODGE. When train travel was FUNDAMENTAL. Did you ever drive a 1940’s DODGE? Okay, sometimes we may have been a bit off TRACK. We might even admit to feeling a bit like a CABOOSE. However, some memories are so important for calling yesterday BACK.
That’s why, for some of us, flea markets and garage sales, to go, we’ll find any EXCUSE. Drool over a Grundig or Robers Reel To REEL, featuring 1 7/8 to 7 ½ R.P.S. Seeing an original rangefinder NIKON, oh my, what that makes some of us old film clickers FEEL!
Dialing a telephone with more than just a cold NUMBER, like Mutual, Fairfax, Alma, Tatlow, KERRISDALE.
A 57 Chevy’s design, what a WONDER! Bushels, pecks, pints, the Fahrenheit SCALE. The Americans ironically still use those old fashioned DEGREES, encompassing a British TRADITION.
The Vauxhall Victor, does that reprise a MEMORY? Some of us stubborn mules never lose track of those trains of thought and perceive them still as helping to maintain an important Canadian POSITION.
