How about the Palomar night CLUB? Anyone remember the TOTEM THEATRE? Just a ‘couple years ago’, eh, BUB. Of course, we never used metrics then and water froze at thirty-two DEGREES. Can you still recall when traffic downtown was a BREEZE?
Ah, the grand Strand Threatre across from the Hudsons Bay and the Majestic on Granville. Why a happy go lucky walk on Richards Street would ‘RESTOR-IA.’ Free parking on the streets, there was AMPLE!
Today, there are so many more amenities, such as magnificent views from high above. The construction cranes are all over the place soaring like birds over much the lower mainland. In downtown Vancouver, ironically I haven’t seen many, Could they be running out of sky to scrape. In the south end, wow Unbelievable the amount of construction, including the old Austin Taylor estate where back in the early 1970’s they were filming Carnal Knowledge starring such names as Jack Nicholson, Art Garfunkel, and Candice Bergen. While sitting on a bus bench recently watching all the towers rising remembering the famous song from the 1960s about little boxes made from Ticky Tack the following lyrics began to rise to the occasion:
THEY ALL LOOK ABOUT THE SAME
Ten more high RISES, springing up like WEEDS.
Municipal property taxes, one SURMISES, city hall FEEDS.
Mayors and many municipal COUNCIL, the majority are happy as a LARK.
Programs promised at election time, later to ‘modified’ or sometimes to be CANCELLED.
But plenty more no-parking zones and meters to park.
Everything returns to business as usual AGAIN.
Election posters recycled in the RAIN.
Oh WELL, let’s put up another five star HOTEL!
