Do you remember the first London Drugs, on Main and The Three Vets, just up the Street? How about when Dominion Foods came and their slogan, “It’s mainly because of the meat.” Do you recall, “Nat’s Department Store, 48th and Fraser.” “Ajax, boom-boom, the foaming cleanser”, another catchy commercial score. There was never a dull moment with Gillette’s, “look sharp, feel sharp” razor and homeruns during the days of the Brooklyn Dodgers. There were characters like Casey Stengel. Do you remember the coin operated foot massagers at that shoe repair shop, downtown Granville and ‘The Shoots The Shoots’ at the P.N.E. There were all the other rides and the cotton candy.
Jack Short who called out the ponies at Exhibition Park, so professional, and Ted Reynolds did the sports on C.B.C.. What about The Rhythm Pals, Mike, Mark and Jack, Ernie Prentice and Betty Phillips’s popular show! Do these images take you back? How about “Knock, knock, who’s there, it’s the Happy Gang!” How about CBC’s Showtime when Robert Goulet sang. A few years later he would be singing “If Ever I Would Leave You,” in Camelot. “Does that ring a bell?”
DO YOU REMEMBER?
Do you recall the days of Fuddle Duddle, Diefenbaker and Follow John? Joe Who and when Meech Lake was in a bit of a muddle, and the Cold War was still on. At the U.N., Khrushchev banging his shoe, and Adlai Stevenson said, you know ‘what’ would freeze over. Lorne Green and Bonanza actually on TV in full colour to view. The Smothers Brothers humour really bowled us over.
Locally, Woods Hardware Store in Gibsons turned into Molly’s Reach and Dave Barrett became a challenge for W.A.C.. Open area classrooms, some tried to teach and Commodore 64 computers were perceived as being revolutionary for dinosaurs, but of course, not me!
