Those images, and more, drifted in recently after going prospecting at the Vancouver Flea Market. And what a nugget I found. An official souvenir of 1954 mint official souvenir of the British Empire Games held in Vancouver.
I was lucky to have watched Bannister and Landy (the famous four minute mile) live. The feeling was like winning a whole bag full of ‘cat’s eyes, ‘cobs, ‘steelies’ and crystals.
At that time in Vancouver, the British influence was still very much in evidence. The streets sported plenty of Vauxhalls, Hillmans and Austins. The flags of the commonwealth countries that participated included: Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, British Guiana, Canada, England, Fiji, Gold Coast, Hong Kong, India, Jamaica, Kenya, New Zealand, Nigeria, Northern Ireland, Northern Rhodesia, Pakistan, Scotland, Singapore, South Africa, Southern Rhodesia, Trinidad, Uganda and Wales.
